OK, in this article I am not going to the very deeps of Structural Engineering. I am focusing more on the Structural Engineer. Well, I will give a brief description about engineering too. Structural Engineering: I will just give what the Wikipedia says, “Structural engineering is mainly a sub-division of civil engineering in which structural engineers are trained to understand, predict, and calculate the stability, strength, and rigidity of built structures for buildings and nonbuilding structures, to develop designs and integrate their design with that of other designers, and to supervise construction of projects on site.” Its history runs for centuries. When humans created the first shelter by using tree branches, they used structural engineering. Well, now everything is developed. Now we build skyscrapers piercing the skies.
Who designed the Hanging Gardens of Babylon? It’s a wonder of structural engineering. So, we had great Structural Engineers throughout the centuries. The Eiffel tower is another great example.
Structural Engineer defined: They work with Civil Engineers and the architects. They are a part of the construction team. Let me put this with a great example: Will consider the human body to a structure. The architects concentrate on the shape and appearance of the body. It’s your outside appearance. The Structural Engineer concentrates on the skeleton and sinews. Without a strong skeleton structure, what can we do?
Every Structural Engineer battles against never-ending forces. That’s the gravity, rain, snow, wind, traffic volume, earthquakes, and water. He is a genius in getting the calculations right. Without a stable structure, no buildings, brid`ges, houses, ships, rockets, and the list continues for ages. It’s not just the construction field, building ships, aircraft, aerospace, automobile, and satellite need Structural Engineers. Imagine a rocket that weighs thousands of tons resting on the metal structure until it leaves the earth.
Let’s come to a simple example; A house’s roof in Canada gets covered by heavy snow each year. The Structural Engineer makes sure that the roof can withstand the weight of the snow covering it. Also, he makes sure a large stadium can withstand earthquakes. What if his calculations went wrong? They make sure the calculations are 100% right and structure will stay rigid no matter what happens. It’s a big responsibility. It’s a very challenging job. You should be a great problem solver to become a Structural Engineer.

* Design roof frames: Beams, joists, trusses, and rafters.
* Floors: Beams, trusses, joists, floor decks, and girders.
* Arches: Braces, columns, walls, and foundations.
* Bridge design: Riding surface, deck, stringers, girders, and piers.
You must be a champion in mathematics and physics to become a Structural Engineer. You should know about the materials and how and when to use them effectively. Also, you should know about the forces and stresses in-depth details. Your prediction is the final decision that will hold a structure rigid throughout its lifetime.
